Notes:
- "fdisk /mbr" restores the boot code in the Master boot record, but not the partition itself. On newer versions of Windows you should use fixmbr, bootrec, mbrfix, or MBRWizard. You can also extract a copy of the specific standard MBR code from tools like bootrec.exe and diskpart.exe in Windows (from various offsets) and copy it to disk with dd (Use bs=446 count=1). For Windows XP SP2 c:\%WINDIR%\System32\diskpart.exe the MBR code is found between offset 1b818h and 1ba17h.

Carving

IsoBuster supports (file) data carving per partition, session, the entire media or over a selected range. It uses both file system data found during the scan and it recognizes a great deal of files based on their signature. You can also add your own signatures. It is also able to create so called 'managed image files' (*.ibp / *.ibq) which allow to create snapshots of media, while tracking all bad sectors so that these sectors can be retried at later dates, or so that other media or hardware can be used to try and complete the image file. IsoBuster features powerful tools to work on these type image files.
Email carving tool to carve e-mail messages from corrupt or orphan mailboxes. Also helpful in email forensics and forensic search. Export reports in common formats, which are acceptable in courts.
Recycle Bin recovery tool designed to carve data from emptied recycle on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, 2000, Vista, XP etc.
"Defraser is a forensic analysis application that can be used to detect full and partial multimedia files in datastreams. It is typically used to find (and restore) complete or partial video files in datastreams (for instance, unallocated diskspace)." Written in C#; runs on Windows.
Simple Carver Suite is a collection of unique tools designed for a number of purposes including data recovery, forensic computing and eDiscovery. The suite was originally designed for data recovery and has since expanded to include unique file decoding, file identification and file classification.
Project: https://foremost.sourceforge.net/. A Linux based console program to recover deleted files based on their headers, footers, and internal data structures; it uses a configuration file to specify the headers and footers to search for, and is intended to be run on disk images. Developed by Jesse Kornblum and Kris Kendall while serving in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, originally designed to imitate the Defense Computer Forensics Lab's carvthis program. First published in 2000, with a major update in 2005 when Nick Mikus joined the project. It served as the basis for Scalpel and inspired tcpxtract, a program for extracting files from network traffic. Its authors recommend using Scalpel instead, and it is limited to processing files smaller than 2GB.
Project: https://gotdfs.com/. A fast, open source file carver that is significantly more efficient than Foremost, which it was originally based on. Developed by Golden G. Richard III and presented at the 2005 Digital Forensic Research Workshop; it allows an examiner to specify a number of headers and footers to recover file types from a piece of media, reading a database of header and footer definitions and extracting matching files from a set of image files or raw device files. Scalpel is filesystem-independent and will carve files from FATx, NTFS, ext2/3, or raw partitions. Maintained by G. Richard III and Lodovico Marziale; it is being incorporated into The Sleuth Kit.
EnCase comes with some EnScripts that will do carving.

A modular Fuse based user space file system on top of LibCarvPath that makes CarvPath style annotations as used by LibCarvPath available as files, providing carving tools with the possibility of recursive multi tool zero-storage carving (also called in-place carving; see zero storage carving). Patches and scripts for Scalpel and Foremost are provided. Works on (split) raw files and, via a separate Libewf module, EWF images. For use in computer forensic frameworks CarvFs is superseded by the closely related MattockFS.

A shared library for carving and file system analysis tools: it allows fragments represented by offset and size to be combined in CarvPath annotations that take the form of file system paths, and addresses the limits of file system paths by mapping extremely fragmented files to a uniquely identifying key in a long-path database. Used by CarvFs, tsk-cp, scalpelcp, and modules for the Open Computer Forensics Architecture that use the OCFA treegraph API; work has started to include LibCarvPath support in PhotoRec.
A set of LibCarvPath aware versions of The Sleuth Kit tools, for use with the normal Sleuth Kit tools in the process of doing zero storage carving: mmls-cp lists the partitions of a carvpath disk image as a list of partition carvpaths, dls-cp lists continuous unallocated fragments of a carvpath partition as unallocated block carvpaths, and icat-cp outputs the data of an inode within a carvpath partition as the carvpath of the file and the carvpath of the file slack. The carvpaths output by dls-cp can be used as the input of a CarvPath aware carving tool.

A successor to CarvFs: a computer forensics actor-framework component, data repository and message bus implemented as a Fuse based user space file system, based partially on CarvFs and the AnyCast-relay from the Open Computer Forensics Architecture. Designed to address some of the shortcomings of OCFA in respect to disk-cache misses and access control, and to serve as an essential foundational component for actor-model based computer forensic frameworks (it is not a complete framework by itself; currently in beta with a Python API, with APIs for other languages planned). It uses CarvPath annotations to designate frozen (immutable) repository data - the lab-side equivalent of sealed digital evidence bags - and provides trusted provenance logs, multi-layer CarvPath based access to frozen data, a sparse-capability AnyCast message bus for toolchains, CarvPath based opportunistic BLAKE2 hashing, page-cache friendly archive interaction, CarvPath based job picking policies, load balancing across hosts, throttle information, and hooks for a distributed FIVES router.
PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory.
Revive It (RevIt) is an experimental carving tool, initially developed for the DFRWS 2006 carving challenge. It uses 'file structure based carving'. Note that RevIt currently is a work in progress.
Magic Rescue is a file carving tool that uses "magic bytes" in a file contents to recover data.
FTK includes some file carvers
X-Ways Forensic provides a robust list of file types as well as the ability to specific custom file headers/trailers. File types are available for carving, identification and filtering.
Adroit Photo Forensics supports data carving of popular image formats. Also supports fragmented carving using SmartCarving and GuidedCarving.
Belkasoft Evidence Center supports data carving for hundreds of forensically important artifacts, such as documents, emails, chats, browser histories, system files (registries, event logs, jumplists, thumbnails), etc. Smart carving helps defragment data inside Live RAM captures.
Blade from Digital Detective will carve different categories of files such as archives, documents, graphics, audio, and video files. User defined carving based on header + footer/length is available as well.
RAID and virtual disk recovery
Runtime Software's RAID Reconstructor will reconstruct RAID Level 0 (Striping) and RAID Level 5 drives.
ReclaiMe Pro is an all-in one data recovery toolkit for filesystem/partition/RAID/NAS recovery.
Recovery of structured data
Recovers deleted SQLite databases, tables and records from disks, volumes, images or files (journal/WAL carving included).
Universal SQLite database analysis tool for examining, extracting and reporting on (uncorrupted, unencrypted) databases; user created templates determine how databases are identified and data is decoded.
Recovers mail, calendar, contacts, journals, notes and attachments from corrupted Exchange EDB databases, with export to PST/Office 365/Exchange.

Media-specific recovery
Data recovery software for all types of media, ranging from optical (CD, DVD, BD) to Hard Drives, USB sticks, floppies etc. It recovers all types of files, both via a wide range of internally supported file systems, UDF, ISO9660, Joliet, FAT (12-32), ExFAT, NTFS, EXT, MFS, HFS(+) etc., as well as via full surface scanning or data carving. Additionally, IsoBuster opens a wide range of image files, both optical or otherwise such as VHD, VHDX, VDI, VMDK, DSK, ISO, IMG, DD, MDS, CUE and more, so that the same functions can be performed on the image file content.
Adroit Photo Recovery is a photo recovery tool that uses validated carving and is able to recover fragmented photos. Adroit Photo Recovery is able to recover high definition RAW images from Canon, Nikon etc.
Cell phone data recovery and analysis products (e.g. Cell Seizure).
Recover data and video from CDs/DVDs/Blu-Ray. This is specifically not for forensic purposes but for data recovery. A different tool called CD/DVD Inspector is for forensic examination of optical media.
Datarescue PhotoRescue Advanced is picture and photo data recovery solution made by the creators of IDA Pro. PhotoRescue will undelete, unerase and recover pictures and files lost on corrupted, erased or damaged compact flash (CF) cards, SD Cards, Memory Sticks, SmartMedia and XD cards.
